Spiritual Care at CommonSpirit Health

CommonSpirit promotes an understanding of the human person as complex beings made in the likeness of God with physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions that require attention and care for optimal health and healing. Our pastoral and spiritual care ministries acknowledge the existential need for all persons to find and sustain meaning, purpose and hope regardless of faith or no faith. Through living our mission and values in our work, we encourage all employees of CommonSpirit to offer basic spiritual caring to our patients, their families, and communities, and to other co-workers.

Communities of Practice

Our Communities of Practice are vibrant virtual spaces and events for spiritual care professionals throughout CommonSpirit Health to gather, connect, grow, and learn together. They are dynamic hubs – in palliative care; chaplaincy education; senior/elder care; behavioral, mental health and wellbeing; and leadership – where chaplains and other spiritual care providers across the care continuum share insights, seek guidance, and deepen their practice of compassionate, evidence-based spiritual care. In these collaborative spaces, we foster a culture of curiosity and continuous quality improvement for professional development and formation. In community, we cultivate and sustain a resilient and agile spiritual care workforce that makes the healing presence of God known in every act of care.

"Spiritual care is an essential part of healthcare. It helps patients cope with illness, suffering, and loss, and it can contribute to their overall healing and well-being. By addressing patients' spiritual needs, healthcare providers can improve the quality of care and the patient experience."
