AI integration into health care: a sponsor's point of view

Sponsors in Catholic health care are stewards. They hold a ministry like CommonSpirit Health in trust and nurture the sustainability of its mission. Elders, guides and guardians: they offer wisdom, they discern, and they protect the ministry’s identity as a Catholic service to the community.
Artificial intelligence is one of those transformations that asks for discernment, from every seat at the table. So we wanted to hear from the sponsorship seat. What are their hopes? What are their concerns? What are they paying attention to now, and what are they watching for next?
In this episode, our guests explore these questions from their own experience as sponsors in Catholic health care.
Our guests in this episode include:
- Phoebe Yang, member of the CommonSpirit Health Board of Stewardship Trustees and a sponsor of Catholic Health Care Federation. Phoebe previously served as a board trustee at Providence St. Joseph Health and as an executive at Ascension, and brings a deep conviction about Catholic social teaching to this work.
- Daniel Barchi, Chief Information Officer for CommonSpirit Health. Daniel is responsible for all technology in the ministry, including artificial intelligence, and Daniel's team supports the use of AI tools in clinical care and in the work of sponsors and trustees.
- Fr. Tom Kopfensteiner, Chief Mission Officer for CommonSpirit Health. He has served as a sponsor and trustee in Catholic health systems in the United States and has participated as a leader in sponsorship formation.
