Hospital-based Community Garden

Concern for the environment needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings. (Laudato Si 91)

A healthy diet is essential to healthy living. Residents of the communities around St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Stockton, CA sometimes lack access to nutritious foods, or cannot afford them. Hospital-based community gardens are one answer to this wellness challenge. Much of the food harvested from our garden is donated to St. Mary’s Dining Room, founded by Father Alan McCoy in 1955 in an abandoned restaurant and bar. During the past 65 years, St. Mary’s Dining Room has expanded to meet the ever-growing needs of men, women and children who experience poverty in our community. They provide breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, 365 days a year, restoring human dignity to more than 700 individuals each day.
